Mind over matter! That’s what we have heard and what we have been taught.

Over the years of being a business owner and entrepreneur, I have definitely noticed a difference in my business when I am on my game and when I am off my game. Can you relate?

The mind can be such a powerful thing, especially when you are in charge of running a business. Stress, late nights, long meetings, marketing, advertising, social media, I mean I could go on. But I’m sure you get the point. As a small business owner and service provider, you wear many hats. But it all starts with your mindset. Let’s chat!

Being a business owner and the leader of your business means you set the tone in every way.

The way you walk, what you say, how you present yourself, and how to show up every single day for your clients and your team. I know being a small business owner is a tough job.

I was a commissioned salon owner for 11 years! Every thought, every action, every interaction was watched and learned by my team and your clients. I took it so seriously and I know you do too.

Let’s really think about this for a minute. Every decision you make shapes your future. If you have a team of people, every decision you make shapes their future. It’s how they feed their children and pay their mortgage. This is the stuff that would weigh on me, so I knew I had to show up and be the best version of myself for them.

If your business is doing well, it’s because of you and your mindset.

If your business is struggling, guess what? It’s because of your mindset.

It’s not your team, or the clients, or the lack of business. Everything, both good or bad always falls on the owner of the business.

So, here are a few things I want you to ask yourself. And remember, self-assessment is the key to growth!

1. How am I showing up every day for my team?

Ready to have a kick a$$ day or ready to have a mediocre day? The vibe and energy you put out is so contagious. Your guests feel it and your team feels it. I know it’s tough, but whatever you have going on at home you must leave at the door before you touch a guest. They are so in tune. I have seen so many stylists lose clients over this.

So what you put out is what you get back. Would you agree?

2. What is my attitude everyday?

Is it positive, happy, upbeat? Or is it negative, miserable, and low energy?

Are you walking in your business like a breath of fresh air or are you taking the wind out of people’s sails?

Your energy is where it all begins, my friends. You can say all the right things, shake hands, say hi, and be available, right? But if it’s not authentic and forced, your clients will feel it. And it will only be a matter of time before they start to look elsewhere.

3. Do I lead by example everyday?

Do I do the things I want my team to do? Do I treat my clients the way I want my team to treat my clients? Or do I demand action and tell my team what to do while I sit in my office pointing fingers?

For all my owners with a team or an assistant, this is crucial.  Your team will only mimic your behavior. So if you want your team to greet clients a certain way, you have to do the same. In my salon, I cleaned the bathroom just like everybody else. It’s all about being fair and leading by example.

You see, my friends, your mindset and how YOU show up truly determines whether your business will thrive or just barely survive! Yes, you must have strategies, systems, and all the things. But YOU are the driving force behind all of it.

4. Do I surround myself with like minded people?

Your tribe is a crucial part of success and growth. Be mindful of who you keep in your inner circle. Do they lift you up or hold you down like an anchor? Will they call you out if you step out of line? Are they your biggest cheerleader and believe in your vision in life and in your business?

All things to keep in mind when you start to elevate your life and career.

5. How long will I allow myself to feel down after something negative happens in my business?

Is it a week or two? Or are you allowing yourself to feel the pain, hurt, or mistake, and then you brush it off to get right back even harder?

Leaders make mistakes. Believe me, I made a ton. But it’s not what happens to you, it’s how you handle it that makes a difference.

The biggest part of all of this is you believing in yourself. You have such a deep passion for yourself and your business. You have a strong vision for serving others. You have to believe you are deserving of greatness. You have to believe in your craft and truly work from this space everyday. Your why has to be present in every decision you make.

Please take a moment or two to ask yourself the questions above. Be honest, accept change, accept the challenge of growth and stepping outside of your comfort zone. Be the leader and business owner you truly know you are meant to be.

Be your own cheerleader. Your team and your clients will thank you for it,  and your business will be so much stronger because of it.
