In a service-based business, it is all about the guest.

What they need, what they want, and how can you can better serve them. Serving others is instilled in us from day one. 

The thought process has always been: how can I do more, how can I care more, how can I take care of you and make you feel better, how can I solve your problems? You guys with me? I enjoy nothing more than serving others, making people feel special, and making them feel like they matter. I would say it is 90% of the reason why most of us chose to be service industry professionals. 

However, there is a side to this that gets lost in translation. That is… Who the heck is taking care of you

Who is making you feel great both physically and mentally? I don’t know about you, but as a former hairstylist of 20 years, I was more mentally exhausted then physically exhausted by then end of the week. It’s not a knock on our industry, it’s the truth. When you serve others, you give away so much of yourself and so much of your energy. 

Have you ever felt burned out? Oh I have. And there are a few things that happen to you when you feel burned out: 

1. You don’t want to show up the way you should
2. You feel exhausted of doing any task, no matter how big or how small
3. You are not providing the best possible service for the guest
4. You could possibly lose business over this. 

So here’s the deal. You must take time to refresh, refuel, reenergize, and maybe just take a day to shut down after a busy week in your business. It’s the only way you can continue to show up at your best for your guests and really feel good about yourself.

Here are some tips I have found to be so helpful:

1. Set boundaries when it comes to being home after a long day at work. 

When you are finally home, be home. Don’t answer your texts, DM’s, messages or anything that has to do with work. That is what Schedulicity is for. Their platform works for you, so you don’t have to.

2. Plan for some quiet time just for you. 

YEP! I know it’s hard, but how about 10-15 minutes in the morning and at night where you can just be. Just be quiet, sit in your office, sit on your porch, sit by the fire and just be. This leads me into #3…

3. Start meditating. 

Don’t worry if you can’t shut your mind off, I can’t either. But I found that guided meditation is the best for people like us. I cannot sit in a corner and turn off my thoughts in silence. I will have a whole to-do list by the end of it. 

But with guided meditation, it walks you through a journey if you will. I use an app called Simple Habit. I started out with 5 minutes at night before bed and it was definitely a game changer. They have thousands of meditations to choose from. Start small and work your way up. I know you have 5 minutes a day that you can take for yourself.

4. Take care of your physical body. 

Work out, walking, yoga, gym, pilates, run. What is it that you can do for 30 minutes a day that will get you moving? Most of you stand for a living. The blood is just not flowing. You start to ache and start to feel weak from the stress of the day. I get it. 

Anything you can do to offset that is key. Let me add this in there too. How many of you are not staying hydrated throughout the day? You have clients stacked up all day, you don’t even have time to drink water. Bring in a half gallon or a gallon of water and set it and forget it. I have found that if the bottle is bigger, I will drink more. 

5. Get a massage or try acupuncture

I would go every 3 weeks for a massage and If I didn’t, my body would not be happy about it. I know these things cost money, but I would start to put some tip money aside for a wellness fund. It is so critical especially for my barbers, hair stylists, makeup artists, and massage therapists that are doing the same movements continuously over and over. 

6. Read or listen to podcasts. 

Tune out and veg out. Take some time to fill your soul with some goodness. Podcasts are blowing up right now. Or maybe you like to curl up with a good book. I am a big Tony Robbins fan and his book “Unshakeable” is great. I also love Gary Vaynerchuk. His book “Crushing It” is also really good.

7. Last but not least. Shut it down. 

Give yourself permission to take a break. It’s impossible to work with a tired mind, body, and soul. Especially when you are serving others. Unplug, take a break from social media, spend time with your family and friends and just enjoy being with your loved ones. I honestly have such a hard time shutting down. But I am a work in progress. Aren’t we all? This is probably one of the best things to do to reset and rejuvenate before you hit the road again on Monday or Tuesday to serve your clients.
