Today, we’re beyond excited to introduce you to Kendra Syverson, a powerhouse who is incredibly gifted at all three. As if that skillset isn’t enough, Kendra—of both Platinum Skincare and Ridgway Plastic Surgery—maintains an Instagram following bigger than the population of Bozeman, Montana, where she lives and works.
Kendra’s grandmas introduced the future esthetician to makeup early.
Rather than going to daycare, she would spend her days with her grandmothers, playing with their makeup and other beauty products. Young Kendra loved to wear bright red lipstick with blue eyeshadow, and her father lovingly dubbed her “Ruby Sue.”
The love and support from her family shaped and helped her grow into the serious player in the beauty game she is today.

Q: When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A: I really wanted to be a teacher! But I guess I fell into this industry pretty early, with my grandmas letting me play with their makeup and all. And I still get to teach classes! I love learning and teaching, because there’s so much information to take in, and teaching can help others in my industry grow as well. I’m really big into supporting other women in our industry, because I’ve worked with some many incredible women that are so strong within themselves that they lift you up and just want you to succeed.
Q: Do you think you’ll continue your education?
A: Definitely. I absolutely love learning; there’s so much information out there on my craft, and I’ll never stop learning. I also love teaching classes around the country, and that’s allowed me to be able to travel to much. I’ve been to all of the lower 48 states, and I just feel like I’m really lucky for that opportunity.
Q: What tips do you have for someone just starting out?
A: Believe in yourself. And be yourself. Work that part time job for as long as you need. If you’re not happy in the environment that you’re in—and if people around you aren’t supportive—go find something else. There are so many supportive women in this industry; it shouldn’t feel like a competition, so if you’re not feeling supported, you’re not in the right place.
On the Beauty Industry From an Insider
Q: What’s your favorite beauty trend these days?
A: Full brows! And self care, low to no makeup, and embracing your skin with pimples and redness. People are so beautiful and I just love it when we start to see that in ourselves. You don’t need to wear a lot of makeup to be in this industry. Some days I do, some days I don’t. I think it’s about enhancing your best features, not changing them, and what makes you feel good.
Q: What are the biggest rewards of a career in the beauty industry?
A: The relationships that I build with my clients. There has been so much laughter in this room. There have been so many tears in this room. When my clients come in and we close the door, it’s 100 percent no judgment. I have been with my clients through pregnancies and get to celebrate with them when their children are born. And I’ve been there through divorces. When that door is shut, they just open their hearts, and I am incredibly grateful that they feel safe doing so.
Q: How did you grow and retain such a large Instagram following?
A: Oh, I feel like it’s really just about making connections! I’ve been so lucky to be able to travel and meet so many new people. Then, you follow each other on Instagram, and they know someone who knows someone else that follows you. Mostly, you have to really engage with your audience and support their craft—and show them you actually care.

Q: What do you use for online scheduling software?
A: I was on a different booking platform and was constantly running into problems: It was not intuitive, and I kept having double bookings, which is never good for business. Customers were getting frustrated, and I’m not tech savvy at all, so I needed something more straightforward. Then I found Schedulicity—it makes sense to me and my customers, and I don’t have to worry about learning a new piece of technology.
I love Schedulicity because of the simplicity. Like I said, I’m not tech savvy at all, so I needed something simple and intuitive. It was equally as important that it be intuitive for my clients as well, because I have such a large age range for my clients. After their first appointment, all they need to do is click the appointment from their appointment history and show up!
On Kendra’s Life in Montana
Q: What’s your favorite thing about Montana?
A: The people! The people are so nice. You could be standing in line at a coffee shop and chatting and laughing with someone you’ve never met before. I moved away and came back and I am so glad that I did. There’s something about leaving a place and coming home with fresh eyes that really lets you see how much you’ve taken for granted. I also love all the outdoorsy stuff! I love fishing and I have three dogs: a pitbull, a golden retriever, and a silver lab. They’re quite the motley crew.
Q: What’s one thing that would surprise us about you?
A: I used to be really sporty! I played basketball, threw javelin, and even ran cross country. I feel like people don’t expect that with the way I look now. I think a lot of people look at this industry from the outside and it’s really easy for them to see it as shallow, but it’s not! I’m pretty sure that there are some pictures of me wearing basketball shorts and flip flops with socks…not even toe socks, just regular socks… somewhere. They need to be burned, but that was me!
